Back in 2009, when I heard author and inspirational speaker Simon Sanek say, “People don’t care about what you do, they care about why you do it,” his words really struck a chord with me.

Often we see too many companies that are simply in the hustle game. Trying to get the money from your pocket to theirs as quickly as possible, and as often as they’re able. If corporations are people, too, then many of them could be considered awful people.

It’s the reason we see millions of people every day leaving their job to find meaning in the workplace.

So then I ask you, the recruiter, the business owner, the HR person who is seeking those people for your company.

  • Number 1
Do you yourself believe in what you’re selling?
  • Number 2
Are you enthusiastic about telling people about where you work and what your company has to offer them?

If the answer is yes, then the next question is simple.

  • Number 3
    How do you show it?
  • Number 4
Do you write a job posting on Indeed that’s just a list of requirements and responsibilities?
  • Group 255
Do you make a 30-second commercial that uses vague jargon to make viewers think you’re different from other companies?
  • Group 257
Or is there a better way? A human way to make a real, positive first impression on someone who could turn into your star performer. Your “A” player.

Think of these scenarios as your “first impression.” What’s the old saying? Your first impression is often your last.

Your company could offer a 70k annual minimum wage, full benefits, meditation pods, flex scheduling, quarterly retreats, a culture that values integrity, and that is truly a united team.

But when a candidate sees you on the face and they see a duck, they’ll assume you walk, talk, and act like a duck, too.

Your job advertisement should convey the “why”

This is something that I do, very often, for clients that I’m working with. Systematically rewire the part of their brain that says “this is how a job description should look because this is how they’ve always looked.” How they’ve always looked has always - frankly - sucked. Our job market is not the same now as it was even a year ago.

If you’re an employer who struggles with employee turnover or has to settle for hiring a mediocre worker from an underwhelming candidate pool, I fully believe that you have left stones unturned.

After decades of finding the best people for our clients, and training companies to be self-sufficient in hiring, I can say that there is more work to be done.
